Parapat, August 10, 2026, Nine lecturers from the English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) participated in the Leadership & Management Training (LMT) for UMSU Leaders, held from August 7 to 9, 2026, at Hotel Niagara, Parapat, North Sumatra. Their participation was part of UMSU’s commitment to strengthening leadership capacity, institutional management, and professional development among its academic and structural personnel.
The nine lecturers from the English Education Study Program who participated in the training were Dr. Cut Novita Srikandi, S.S., M.Hum.; Dr. Hj. Dewi Kesuma Nst., S.S., M.Hum.; Dr. Fatimah Sari Siregar, S.Pd., M.Hum.; Dr. Mandra Saragih, S.Pd., M.Hum.; Muhammad Rafi’i, S.Pd., M.A.; Dr. Pirman Ginting, S.Pd., M.Hum.; Selamat Husni, S.Pd., M.Hum., Ph.D.; Dr. Tengku Winona Emelia, S.Pd., M.Hum.; and Yusriati, S.S., M.Hum. Several of the participating lecturers also hold responsibilities in various faculties, institutions, units, bodies, and centers within UMSU, making their participation relevant not only to their professional development but also to their broader institutional responsibilities.
The three-day LMT was attended by 152 participants from various structural positions and organizational units within UMSU, including faculties, bureaus, institutions, centers, and other university units. The training was designed to strengthen participants’ leadership competencies and understanding of institutional management while encouraging collaboration, strategic thinking, and a shared commitment to the advancement of UMSU.
The program began on Friday, August 7, with participant registration, followed by orientation and a pre-test. The opening session, organized by the Central Executive Board of Muhammadiyah (PP Muhammadiyah), carried the theme “Building Synergy among Muhammadiyah Higher Education Institutions within the Muhammadiyah Ecosystem.” The activity was opened by dr. Agus Taufiqurrahman, M.Kes., Chairman of the Central Executive Board of Muhammadiyah, and attended by prominent Muhammadiyah and UMSU leaders, including Prof. Dr. Akrim, M.Pd., Rector of UMSU, and Prof. Dr. Agussani, M.AP., Chairman of the UMSU Board of Trustees (BPH).
The first day also featured an orientation session and pre-test designed to help participants reflect on their personal leadership characteristics and organizational responsibilities. This was followed by a session entitled “Looking into the Future and Identifying Problems,” which encouraged participants to examine future challenges and identify important issues that require strategic leadership and institutional responses.
On Saturday, August 8, participants began the day with spiritual activities, including Qiyam al-Lail, Tadabbur Tanwirul al-Qulub, and Sholat Subuh, followed by an outbound session. The training continued with a session on PHWM, Akhlaq, Muhammadiyah Leadership, and Work Ethics, delivered by Prof. Dr. H. Hasyimsyah Nasution, MA., and Dr. Ghoffar Ismail, M.A. Participants then took part in a series of sharing sessions and Focus Group Discussions focusing on key areas of university management, including human resource development and top-level leadership, internal quality assurance, institutional performance and reputation, marketing and branding, communication, collaboration and networking, as well as change and risk management.
These sessions provided the English Education lecturers with opportunities to gain broader perspectives on leadership and institutional management. The discussions also encouraged participants to exchange ideas and experiences with colleagues from different faculties, units, institutions, and centers across UMSU. Such interaction was particularly valuable in strengthening collaboration and understanding of the complex responsibilities involved in managing and developing a higher education institution.
On Sunday, August 9, the training addressed the increasingly important role of technology and artificial intelligence in higher education. A sharing session entitled “Management of Technology-Based Higher Education Information and Artificial Intelligence” discussed the challenges and opportunities presented by digital transformation and AI. The session featured Dr. Bambang Riyanta, S.T., M.T.; Dr. Ir. Wahyudi, S.T., M.T.; Dr. Punang Amaripuja; and Ir. Moh. Adam Jerusalem, Ph.D. The topic was highly relevant to current developments in higher education and the need for university leaders and academic personnel to understand the strategic implications of technological advancement.
The final sessions focused on roadmap and Renstra formulation as well as action-plan development, followed by a post-test and follow-up action planning. Through these activities, participants were encouraged to transform the knowledge and insights gained during the training into concrete plans that could be implemented within their respective areas of responsibility. The LMT concluded with an official closing session led by the Muhammadiyah leadership.
The participation of nine lecturers from the English Education Study Program, FKIP UMSU, demonstrates the program’s commitment to continuous professional development and active participation in university-wide initiatives. Through this training, the lecturers had the opportunity to strengthen their leadership knowledge, broaden their institutional perspectives, develop professional networks, and gain new insights into strategic management, quality assurance, collaboration, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence.
The experience gained from the LMT is expected to contribute positively to the lecturers’ academic and institutional responsibilities and to support the continuous improvement of the English Education Study Program and UMSU as a whole. Their participation also reflects the importance of developing academic personnel who are not only committed to teaching and research but are also prepared to contribute actively to leadership, institutional development, collaboration, and innovation.
