Medan, June 3, 2026 – The English Education Department Student Association (EEDSA), through its Cadre Development and Talent Interest Division, successfully conducted the second Speak Up Academy under the theme “Speak With Confidence, Inspire With Communication” in one of the classrooms at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU).
The program was attended by students of the English Education Study Program and was designed to strengthen their public speaking skills, communication abilities, and self-confidence in using English. As one of EEDSA’s student development initiatives, Speak Up Academy provides a supportive and interactive environment where students can actively practice speaking English beyond the classroom.
The event began at 1:30 PM and was facilitated by the committee from the Cadre Development and Talent Interest Division. Participants first joined a self-introduction session aimed at creating a comfortable learning atmosphere and encouraging interaction among students. The activity then continued with several speaking-based challenges designed to improve fluency, spontaneity, and confidence in public speaking.
One of the highlights of the program was the Topic Pick Speaking Challenge, where participants randomly selected a topic and delivered a short speech in English for one to two minutes. This activity encouraged students to think critically, organize their ideas, and communicate confidently before an audience.
Participants also took part in the Audience Response Session, which promoted active engagement by allowing students to respond to and discuss their peers’ presentations. Another exciting activity was the Words Challenge Game, which helped participants expand their vocabulary and improve their ability to use English in different communication contexts.
To conclude the program, a Feedback Session was conducted to provide constructive suggestions and encouragement for participants. Through this session, students reflected on their performance and identified areas for improvement in their speaking abilities.
The implementation of Speak Up Academy received full support from the leadership of the English Education Study Program. The Head of the Study Program, Dr. Pirman Ginting, S.Pd., M.Hum., emphasized that student-led activities such as Speak Up Academy are essential for developing competencies that complement academic learning.
“The English Education Study Program strongly supports initiatives organized by EEDSA because they provide students with opportunities to develop practical communication skills, confidence, and leadership qualities. These competencies are crucial for students’ success both during their studies and in their future careers,” said Dr. Pirman Ginting.
Meanwhile, Selamat Husni Hasibuan, S.Pd., M.Hum., Ph.D., Secretary of the English Education Study Program, highlighted the importance of providing students with meaningful learning experiences beyond formal classroom activities.
“We believe that education should not only focus on academic achievement. Students also need opportunities to strengthen their communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Programs such as Speak Up Academy serve as valuable platforms for students to learn, practice, and grow together,” he stated.
Representing EEDSA, Najwa Asyifa, expressed her appreciation for the support provided by the Study Program and the enthusiasm shown by participants.
“We are grateful for the continuous support from the Head and Secretary of the Study Program. Their encouragement enables EEDSA to organize meaningful programs that directly contribute to students’ development. Through Speak Up Academy, we hope students become more confident and active in using English both in academic settings and daily life,” she said.
According to the organizing committee, Speak Up Academy was initiated in response to common challenges faced by students, particularly nervousness and lack of confidence when speaking English in public. By creating a positive and engaging learning environment, the program aims to help participants overcome these challenges and gradually become more confident communicators.
The event concluded successfully at 4:15 PM with enthusiastic participation from all attendees. The positive response received from participants demonstrated the importance of providing engaging opportunities for students to practice and improve their English-speaking abilities beyond the classroom.
Through the successful implementation of the second Speak Up Academy, EEDSA and the English Education Study Program reaffirm their shared commitment to nurturing students who are confident, communicative, and well-prepared to face future academic, professional, and global challenges.
