Medan, June 2, 2026 – The English Education Department Student Association (EEDSA), with the support of the English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU), successfully organized English Day: Movie Time in one of the classrooms of the FKIP building. The event was attended by students of the English Education Study Program and aimed at promoting an engaging and supportive English-learning environment on campus.
As part of the work program of EEDSA’s Talent and Interest Division, the activity was designed to enhance students’ listening skills, expand their vocabulary, and strengthen their confidence in communicating in English. By utilizing movies as a learning medium, participants were encouraged to experience English in a more contextual, authentic, and enjoyable way.
The event began at 1:30 PM with the distribution of snacks, followed by an opening remark delivered by Risma Abel Tri Lestari, Head of the Talent and Interest Division of EEDSA. During her remarks, she welcomed participants and provided a brief overview of the activity. The main session consisted of watching an English-language movie, during which students were encouraged to focus on understanding the dialogues and expressions used by the characters to improve their listening comprehension.
The Head of the English Education Study Program, Dr. Pirman Ginting, S.Pd., M.Hum., expressed his appreciation for the initiative undertaken by EEDSA.
“This English Day activity represents an innovative approach to English language learning. Through movies, students can learn more interactively while gaining a better understanding of how English is used in real-life situations. We highly appreciate EEDSA’s creativity in organizing activities that support students’ academic and personal development,” he stated.
Similarly, the Secretary of the English Education Study Program, Selamat Husni Hasibuan, S.Pd., M.Hum., Ph.D., emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for students to practice English beyond the classroom.
“Programs like this are highly beneficial in fostering an English-speaking culture within the academic community. We hope that English Day will continue to be organized regularly and serve as a platform for students to further develop their communication skills,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Risma Abel Tri Lestari, Head of the Talent and Interest Division and person in charge of the event, explained that the Movie Time concept was chosen because it effectively combines learning with students’ interests.
“Our goal is to create a learning atmosphere that is both relaxing and educational. Through movies, students can improve their listening skills while also building greater confidence in using English in everyday communication,” she explained.
Through English Day: Movie Time, EEDSA and the English Education Study Program hope to encourage students to use English more actively in their daily lives and to continuously develop the communication skills necessary for academic success and future professional careers.
